‘A composition of cubes’ was the first thing the homeowners told me when we set out to design their new home in Carmel-by-the-Sea.
Each aspect of the house - living, dining, sleeping - was arranged into a series of cubes that extended from one end of the property to the other, gradually stepping down as the site sloped.
Although the modern design deviated from the traditionalism of Carmel-by-the-Sea we opted to used traditional materials - stone, wood, and stucco - to respect the context of the neighborhood.
